The September edition of the Epworth Review carries three articles on Dietrich Bonhoeffer. First, there is Stephen Plant’s Peake Memorial Lecture which explores how Peake and Bonhoeffer used the Bible. Then Keith Clements writes about his own beautiful publication Bonhoeffer and Britain (reviewed below) and, lastly, Joel D Lawrence provides a helpful review of Bonhoeffer literature, breaking it down into separate categories … or as he puts it at the beginning ‘A guide through the Maze’.

And if this is were not enough, there are three other main articles and a dozen book reviews.

The Epworth Review is published four times a year for an annual subscription of £17 which includes p&p and is available from:  mph, 4 Wesley Road, Werrington, Peterborough, PE4 6ZP or sales@mph.org.uk

The Dietrich Bonhoeffer Works English Edition

The Dietrich Bonhoeffer Works English Edition has already published new translations of eight volumes of the seventeen-volume German edition, including such favourites as Discipleship, Life Together, Creation and Fall, and Ethics. Still in process are Letters and Papers from Prison plus seven more volumes of Bonhoeffer's collected writings from 1918 to 1945 -- letters, sermons, essays, addresses, and lecture courses.

Next to appear is Conspiracy and Imprisonment. 1940-1945, which is the companion volume to Ethics. The volume which deals with Bonhoeffer's time in Britain, London. 1933-1935, will follow, edited by Keith Clements. (Donations in support of this volume may be sent to the editor of this Newsletter, made out to "Bonhoeffer Works English Edition.")

In addition to the new and consistent translations, the volumes in the series contain excellent notes, introductions, commentary, bibliographies, and indexes, making them indispensable for the study of Bonhoeffer. While libraries will want the hardcover editions, several of Bonhoeffer's books widely used by students and congregations will appear in paperback versions -- Discipleship is already available in paperback.

Of the most recent volume to appear, Ethics, Prof. David Ford of Cambridge wrote: "Bonhoeffer's Ethics is one of the greatest works of twentieth-century theology, gripping in its capacity to go to the heart of living the Christian life, rich in generative concepts, and still powerfully relevant. This new translation of the authoritative German edition does full justice to a classic text, reads very well, and is superbly edited." The Bonhoeffer Works English Edition is published by Fortress Press in the United States and distributed in Britain by Alban Books.
