Concealment/Disclosure (1999)
Based upon a glass sculpture with a holocaust theme, by Czech artist Jan Votava, I attempt to create the impression of the presence of a person without one being present - to hint at the nature of religious experience, bereavement, memory and loss. The face of the sun, the symbol of life, is partly hidden by the Madonna ’s vesture, the symbol of sorrow/grief.

My Mother raised five sons; to me she epitomises the medieval image of the Pelican-Christ - a gift from heaven. My father worked with heavy machinery and trained apprentices; he made wine - a man of the earth.
